Tinctures 101: What Are They and How Do You Use Them?

Blog

Tinctures are a great way to consume cannabis for anyone who wants fast, consistent, powerful effects. They come in small bottles, which makes it easy to take them just about anywhere.

Since there’s no smoke or vapor, you can consume them discreetly without worrying about inhaling anything or creating a suspicious smell. They’re also extremely potent and easy to dose, so you can get exactly the amount you want in just a few seconds. Tinctures certainly have their place in the future of cannabis.

What Are Tinctures?

Tinctures are a type of cannabis concentrate where THC and/or CBD is extracted using alcohol. You may have heard of “green dragon,” which is a basic type of cannabis tincture that people can make at home.

Now that cannabis is legal here in Colorado, though, you can find tinctures with precise doses that were made by leading cannabis experts.

Tinctures typically come in little vials or bottles with droppers in them, which allows for easy and precise dosing.

How Do You Use Tinctures?

Of all the wonderful ways to consume cannabis, tinctures may be one of the easiest, especially if you’re looking for a very specific dose. The kind of tincture you’ll find at a Denver dispensary will have been tested in a lab, so you’ll know exactly what to expect in terms of potency.

The packaging and your budtender will both have insights into preparing an appropriate dose with the eyedropper. From there, just use the dropper to administer precisely the amount of THC or CBD you want to consume.

If you already have plenty of experience with cannabis, you probably know at least roughly how much of a dose is right for you. It will be easy to get it just right with a tincture.

If you’re just starting your cannabis journey, though, you may not know how much tincture to take.

No worries– just start with a small dose, then gradually work your way up to stronger doses on future days until you get to the level that feels right for you.

Like with edibles, the best strategy for consuming this potent form of cannabis is to start low and go slow, so you don’t end up getting uncomfortable from being too high.

When you consume tinctures, there are two primary options you may want to choose:

  • Add a dose to your food or drink
  • Put the tincture straight under your tongue

If you add the tincture to food or drink, you can basically turn just about anything into an edible. Your body will digest the tincture just like it would with a cannabis edible, and you can normally expect to feel results in about an hour (but give it more time than that, just in case).

The other option is to hold the tincture under your tongue for about a minute, then swallow it.

This allows a gland in your mouth to introduce the tincture to your sublingual artery, which will lead to slightly faster and more powerful results.
