Panama Red

Strains

Panama Red is a 100% Sativa cannabis strain popular in the 1960s. It is, however, still popular among cannabis users who prefer the pure Sativa effects of energizing, uplifting, and sparkling creativity. Panama Red is a Landrace strain native to Panama, Central America. Despite the low THC of about 16%, this cannabis strain is still favorable for the typical Sativa effects.

As you would expect of a Sativa plant, Panama Red grows slender and tall. It produces tight green buds and brightly colored narrow leaves. The leaves can show a mixture of gold, red, and purple colors, which defines its beauty. You will also notice a waxy and thick layer of resin covering the leaves.

Panama Red has one of the longest flowering periods in the cannabis world. The cycle ends in about 11-12 weeks and only provides an average yield. These were not a big deal during its time, but they are now a setback that we have high-yield and fast-maturing varieties. That is the reason for its rarity because many growers prefer other options. But if you are still determined to grow it, ensure you can provide maximum light hours and high soil nutrients and best grown outdoors.

Panama Red emits a very earthy, tropical aroma that is only enticing. When it burns up in smoke, it reveals pungent and dank notes. Some users also describe it as skunky. Panama Red is one of the few marijuana strains with a sweet licorice taste on the inhale and undertones of woodsy and grassy on the exhale. The taste is not overly strong!

The Pana Red has a cerebral high with strong euphoria, happiness, energy boost, and sociability. It also has other renowned Sativa effects such as uplifting, creativity boosting, and increasing appetite. Panama Red is the perfect weed strain for daytime use and pairs well with eating, watching, housework, art and crafts, and social gatherings.

Panama Red has many medicinal uses, including alleviating the symptoms of fatigue, chronic pain, anxiety, ADD, migraines, mood swings, etc.

    1. Back in the late seventies early 80s, we cherished redbud from panama, had a friend that lived there, he died, the article was running high times with a big old red leaf on there, our red bud was totally red, and sweet sweet success, I would give my left nut to buy some seats

  1. I was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone when I was in the U.S. Navy from 1971 to 1974. Panama Red was definitely our weed of choice. It gave a great, relaxing high, and was good for partying in general. The first time I smoked it, I went to bed and had vivid hallucinations that I can still remember today. But I never did hallucinate on it after that. We rolled our joints with “Banana paper.” The yellow/brown paper was used to wrap fruit for the most part. It was shiny on one side and dull on the other.

  2. Brings back great 70’s memories. What other strain had its own ballad!

    Panama red, panama red
He’ll steal your woman, then he’ll rob your head
    Panama red, panama red
    On his white horse, mescalito
    He come breezin’ through town
I’ll bet your woman’s up in bed with ol’ Panama red

The judge don’t know when red’s in town
    He keeps well hidden underground
    But everybody’s acting lazy
    Falling out and hangin’ ’round
    My woman said, “hey pedro
You’re actin’ crazy like a clown”
    Nobody feels like working
Panama red is back in town

    Panama red, panama red

    Everybody’s looking out for him
    ‘Cause they know red’s satisfies
Little girls love to listen to him
    Sing and tell sweet lies
But when things get too confusing, honey
    You’re better off in bed
And i’ll be searching all the joints in town for Panama red

    Panama red, panama red
He’ll steal your woman, then he’ll rob your head
    Panama red, panama red
    On his white horse, mescalito
    He come breezin’ through town
I’ll bet your woman’s up in bed with ol’ Panama red

(FYI Credits go to Peter Rowan, songwriter, and The New Riders Of The Purple Sage for making it into an anthem it became.)

  4. I remember that the first time I smoked PR was in the late 70’s with my brother and a friend All in the bench seat of my brothers truck on a long straight hwy here in FL and it was a Pinner.
we had to pull over because 3 brains went out at the same time and we couldn’t remember where we were going, at or going for quite a few minutes at least then we remembered we were on our way to work, the only other weed that did to me (and my brother again) was Christmas tree that we would get every year around Christmas time after harvest watching TV on the big dish and coming to to find out what we were watching was not what was on any longer, it was the next show, now that blew us away
